What is Chianti Classico and how it’s important?

The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, a relatively new tier within the famed Italian wine region, is proving its worth. What initially might have seemed like a risky move, perhaps not fully understood even by those who championed it, has blossomed into a resounding success. Years of tasting experience, particularly highlighted by recent retrospectives showcasing a range of vintages, clearly demonstrate this evolution.

Early Gran Seleziones, while showcasing the inherent quality of their respective harvests, sometimes felt a bit formulaic, a touch less expressive than their potential. Today, the picture is far more vibrant. The category has broadened significantly, attracting a wider range of producers and, crucially, revealing a greater diversity of styles.

The overall quality remains impressively high, but now, individual wineries and specific terroirs are truly shining through, making for a fascinating and rewarding tasting experience. This allows for compelling narratives, easily understood and appreciated by both local wine lovers and, importantly, a global audience.

A crucial aspect to consider is the Riserva category. Often existing between the broader Chianti Classico designation (and sometimes single vineyard bottlings) and the Gran Selezione, Riserva wines sometimes run the risk of feeling overlooked, caught between striving for a more “international” profile and the Gran Selezione’s focused expression.

However, recent tastings show that many Riservas are holding their own, especially those from producers who are thoughtfully crafting their entire portfolio, ensuring each wine tier has its own distinct character and purpose. This demonstrates that, far from being overshadowed, the Riserva category is a valuable, and delicious, part of the Chianti Classico story. The increased definition of style across the different wines has improved the Chianti Classico offering as a whole.
